Low Porosity Hair or Product Buildup?
Understanding Low Porosity Hair and How Heat Hats Can Help If you've ever struggled with your hair feeling dry no matter how much product you apply, or if water seems to bead on top of your strands rather than soaking in, you might have low porosity hair. And whilst YES, understanding your hair's porosity is helpful for creating an effective wash day routine, many people often confuse low porosity hair with product buildup. This mix-up can lead to frustration and ineffective hair care. Let’s break it down so you can better understand your hair and how TT heat hats can transform your moisture retention game. What Is Low Porosity Hair? Hair porosity refers to how easily moisture and oils can penetrate the hair shaft. Low porosity hair has a tightly bound cuticle layer, meaning water, conditioners, and oils have a hard time absorbing into the hair shaft. This results in products sitting on top of the hair rather than being fully absorbed. Common Signs of Low Porosity Hair: Water beads up on the hair rather than soaking in. Hair takes longer to get fully saturated when washing. Products seem to sit on top of the hair and cause a white cast. Hair dries very slowly because moisture is locked inside once it finally penetrates. Protein-heavy products may leave the hair feeling stiff or brittle. Low Porosity Hair vs. Product Buildup Many people mistake low porosity hair for product buildup because both conditions result in products not being absorbed effectively. However, there is a key difference: Low porosity hair naturally resists moisture and product absorption due to a tightly sealed cuticle. Product buildup happens when hair products (such as oils, butters, silicones, and styling gels) accumulate on the hair and scalp, preventing moisture from getting in. A quick way to tell the difference is by clarifying your hair with a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo or apple cider vinegar rinse. If your hair still repels moisture even after cleansing, it’s likely that you have low porosity hair rather than buildup. How Heat Hats Can Help Low Porosity Hair One of the biggest challenges with low porosity hair is getting moisture deep into the hair shaft. This is where heat therapy becomes a game-changer. The Science Behind Heat and Hair Absorption Heat helps to lift the cuticle layer of the hair, allowing moisture, oils, and treatments to penetrate more effectively. When you apply heat during deep conditioning, the hair shaft opens up, enabling hydration and nutrients to be fully absorbed rather than just sitting on the surface. Benefits of Using a Heat Hat for Low Porosity Hair: Increases Moisture Absorption – Using a heat hat during deep conditioning allows the cuticle layer to open, ensuring that the conditioner penetrates deeply rather than sitting on top. Enhances Product Effectiveness – Without heat, many deep conditioners won’t work as effectively on low porosity hair. A heat hat ensures that you’re getting the most out of your hair products. Prevents Dryness and Breakage – When moisture can’t get into the hair, dryness and breakage occur. Heat hats help combat this by making sure hydration gets locked in where it’s needed. Saves Time and Effort – Instead of sitting under a hooded dryer or using a heavy duty wet steam machine, a heat hat provides consistent warmth in a more convenient, hands-free way. Boosts Scalp Health – Heat increases blood circulation in the scalp, promoting healthy hair growth and better absorption of scalp treatments. Ready to take your hair care to the next level? Learn moreSilicones in Hair Care: Why They’re Not as Bad as You Think
When it comes to hair care for afro and curly hair, silicones have often been labelled as “the enemy.” But are they really that bad? Silicones have been misunderstood in the natural hair community for years. With the right approach, they can enhance your hair care routine and deliver amazing results. What Are Silicones and Why Are They in Hair Products? Silicones are synthetic ingredients often found in hair products like conditioners, serums, and heat protectants. Their primary purpose is to coat the hair shaft, creating a smooth surface that provides: Slip and Detangling: Perfect for curly and afro-textured hair to prevent breakage. Frizz Control: Seals the hair cuticle for a sleek finish. Heat Protection: Shields hair from damage caused by styling tools. Shine Boost: Leaves hair looking glossy and healthy. Not all silicones are the same: Water-soluble silicones: These wash out easily with water and don’t cause buildup. Non-Water-Soluble Silicones: These require proper cleansing to avoid residue but offer longer-lasting protection. Why Did Silicones Get a Bad Reputation? Silicones became a hot topic in the early 2000s when the Curly Girl Method (CGM) gained popularity. CGM advocates encouraged avoiding ingredients like silicones, which were said to: Cause buildup if not washed out regularly. Create a barrier that blocks moisture absorption. Require harsh sulfates for removal, potentially drying out the hair. While these concerns have some truth, they don’t tell the whole story. When used correctly, silicones can be a helpful addition to your hair care routine. How to Use Silicone-Based Products Effectively If you love the benefits of silicones but worry about buildup, follow these tips: Use Them Strategically: Apply silicone-based serums or conditioners before heat styling in humid weather for detangling, to help seal split ends, smooth damaged cuticles or for frizz control and environmental protection. Clarify Regularly: To prevent buildup, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo every 2-4 weeks (or as needed). Ensure you wash your hair 2 or 3 times before you condition to ensure your hair and scalp are completley clean of product. Rehydrate Immediately: After clarifying, your hair might feel stripped or dry. This is where deep conditioning with a heat hat comes in—don’t skip it! Combine with Heat: Using gentle heat while deep conditioning after a clarifying shampoo ensures your hair absorbs maximum moisture and nutrients, helping to prevent dryness. Why Heat with a Heat Hat Is Essential After Removing Silicones When you use a clarifying shampoo to remove silicones, your hair’s cuticle is lifted to eliminate buildup. While this is great for cleansing, it can leave your hair feeling dry and vulnerable. That’s why deep conditioning with heat is a must. A heat hat helps: Open the Hair Cuticle: This allows the deep conditioner to penetrate deeply for intense hydration. Restore Moisture: Replenishes the moisture lost during clarifying, leaving your curls soft, bouncy, and nourished. Prevent Breakage: Strengthens your hair by ensuring it absorbs the nutrients it needs. For the best results, apply a rich, moisturizing deep conditioner after clarifying, pop on your heat hat, and let the magic happen for 20, 30 or 45 minutes. Ready to take your deep conditioning to the next level? Check out our TT heat hats designed to help you achieve your healthiest, most coonditioned curls yet. Silicones Are Not the Enemy Silicones don’t deserve their bad reputation. When used thoughtfully and combined with proper cleansing and moisturizing routines, they can protect your hair, reduce frizz, and make your curls more manageable.
